The Initial Adjustment to a Leaf Blower Engine

When the timing is out of adjustment in your leaf blower’s carburetor, the blower may run so gradually that it reacts during surgery or so quickly that it is in a constant state of overdrive — and both situations make using it tough. Instead of continuing on with the issue, adjust the initial timing to the appropriate amount the moment you purchase the tool. The initial timing is that the setting of this machine in idle, and permits you to adjust the machine for the most effective operation.

Why Timing Matters

If you are a casual user of a leaf blower, you may not see the value of maintaining the proper timing settings on the compressor’s carburetor. A leaf blower that’s out of sync will run erratically, placing undue stress on the engine and maybe shortening the lifespan of the engine. Hesitation of this engine, excessive vibration and chugging and coughing are all possible symptoms which could indicate a timing problem. When the timing isn’t right, you can still use the device, but not as readily and efficiently as when it is set correctly.

Factory Settings

When you remove the leaf compressor in the box immediately following purchase, it should be timed perfectly and ready for use. After the leaf blower timing is off at purchase, it may signify that there’s an intrinsic problem with the blower. Return any device which doesn’t perform well when new and exchange it for another one or call the toll-free number of the producer to troubleshoot a brand-new machine. Consult the operator’s manual which came with the device for troubleshooting tips, if needed.

Obtaining the Timing Screws

Most models of leaf blowers have 2 screws which you can turn in either direction to adjust the timing of this carburetor. Among these screws is that the idle speed screw which controls how fast or slow the machine idles and the other is that the combination screw which controls the proportion of fuel and air which enter the engine. To access those screws, first remove the screws which hold the outer housing of the machine instead of revealing the screws on the carburetor. A few older-model leaf blowers may also have an additional screw which allows you to place the mixture for use on the high-speed setting. If you have trouble locating the timing and mixture screws, consult your owner’s manual for a diagram which labels all of the parts of the machine.

Adjusting the Timing Screws

To obtain a good starting point for alteration of carburetor idle speed, then turn the mixture screw to the right until it barely rests on the seat. Turn it 1.5 turns into the left as a starting point for alteration. Perform the very same steps on the idle speed screw. With the machine running, gradually adjust each adjustment screw into the right or the left until the blower runs smoothly. Increase the throttle following adjustment to ensure that the settings permit the blower to run under the increased power load without stalling or perishing.
