How to Refinish Wood Furniture

Refinished wood is a super easy and affordable way to revitalize old wooden handyman services pieces. The end-product of refinished wood is a brand new piece of furniture that will add style to your home’s décor, and this type of project doesn’t even take that long to complete.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do your own wood refinishing project in under a day:

Apply Stripper

Experts advise that aerosol spray paint stripper should be used because it’s easier to manage, and it helps you avoid leaks when you’re doing small projects. Spray the stripper paint on the surface uniformly, and then leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the old wood to come off.

Get Rid of Old Finish

Use a suitable tool to scrape off the worn-out finish first, making sure to wipe the blade in between scrapes so that it’s more effective at removing at least most of the worn-out wooden finish.

Clean with Mineral Spirits

Use a clean cloth to wipe the wood with mineral spirits, and allow it to dry completely before you move on to the next step.

Sand Smooth

Place 150-grit sandpaper inside a palm sander and use it to remove any remaining parts of the old finish. Keep on sanding until you get to the bare wood. Next, take 200-grit fine sandpaper to sand the handyman piece down until the entire surface is all smooth and uniform.

Remove Sanding Residue

Take a tack cloth and give the entire surface a good wipe down in order to get rid of any dust that’s left over from the sanding.

Apply Stain

This is one of the easiest steps in the process, especially when you use a staining pad. Simply take the pad and slightly dip it into the stain of your choice, and then use long, even strokes to apply it onto the furniture piece.

Remove Excess Stain

Take a clean cloth to wipe off any excess stain that might be left behind. When wiping, move with the grain using gentle strokes to prevent the wood from streaking. You can apply as many coats as you like until you get your preferred color. Just let the coats dry in between coats so that you can see its effects before deciding on adding another one.

Apply Clear Coat

Apply a few layers of an oil-based clear coat to protect the furniture piece while giving it a glossy finish. Use the spray-on variety, making sure that you’ve got an even, steady hand while spraying it. Start with two coats and then allow them to dry before sanding them with fine sandpaper. Spray a final layer on for an exceptionally elegant finish.

Let it Dry

Place your finished house repairs piece in a well-ventilated spot and leave it to dry for 24 hours. Then, take it out and style it as you wish.
