Safety of Using Resin Furniture

Resin furniture often masquerades as wicker or supplies a higher-end alternative to cheap plastic tables and chairs. However, concerns over the protection of resins can make you think before you purchase this kind of outdoor furniture. But resin furniture is usually made from high-density polyethylene, a plastic that is not known to leach harmful chemicals, and does not include formaldehyde, unlike other varieties of resin.

What’s Resin Furniture?

Resin is typically utilized in outdoor patio and deck furniture, including faux-wicker, yard chairs, tables and lounge chairs. Made from a solid polymer resin, this kind of furniture is cheap when compared to wood and metal, impervious to moisture damage and hard under demanding treatment, whether by young children or solid summer storms. Because the dye is mixed into the mould, leaf furniture never needs refinishing unless you would like to alter the shade.

Resin and Resin-Based

The expression resin is now synonymous with formaldehyde-laden sprays, like urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde. Even though these are kinds of leaf, they aren’t utilized in the making of plastic furniture. The confusion probably stems from medium-density fiberboard (MDF), a popular alternative to wood furniture and cabinetry, which can be constructed of wood particles and formaldehyde adhesive resins. MDF emits a low amount of formaldehyde for five years following construction, reducing air quality.

Safety Issues

Snapping, cracking and splitting, though uncommon, are the biggest safety problem with resin furniture. This is most common with fake wicker; when the woven strands break, the resulting edge can be very sharp. Based on the manner of furniture, the cushions that arrive with resin chairs might include formaldehyde, and in case you are sensitive to the low-level of toxic gases discharged from the furniture, the cushions might result in an allergic response. This is easily remedied by replacing them with formaldehyde-free options.

Benefits of Resin Furniture

Resin offers a superior amount of durability. You can leave it outside forever and clean it easily using a power washer, hose or stiff brush and soap. While it can develop mold under the right conditions, resin stands up well to family bleach. This is particularly useful for faux-wicker style furniture; organic wicker proves difficult to completely clean without causing damage, and the organic substances create a breeding ground for mold in damp conditions. Unlike wood and metal furniture, that have colour and sealant applied over the base fabric, vinyl furniture is coloured while the plastic is still fluid, that carries the color during the entire piece. This means scratches or dings mix into the surrounding surface.
