The way to Fix the Elastic in Sheets

Waking to locate your fitted sheet rumpled in the middle of the bed is no way to start the day. Replacing the worn out elastic in the corners of the sheets is a fast fix. Even if you’re not especially skilled at using a sewing machine, then you can measure, snip and sew fresh elastic set up. Don’t worry — that the repair ends up on the bottom of your bed where nobody sees it.

Lay a corner of this fitted sheet flat on a tabletop using the old elastic facing up. Carefully trim away the old elastic, cutting in a straight line as close to the stitching as possible. Catch the corner seam since it is, removing only the elastic. Repeat for all corners. Alternatively, you can choose from the stitches that hold the old elastic in place if it is hemmed in.

Press the trimmed edge of the sheet to eliminate wrinkles. Machine sew an edge-finish or overcast stitch to complete the trimmed edge of this sheet.

Assess the length of the trimmed, finished edge at the same corner. This measurement is the total span the newest elastic for that corner must stretch to adapt.

Cut a piece of 1/4-inch wide elastic, which makes it two-thirds of this edge measurement in length. Generally, you can figure out the stretch allowance and cut elastic one-third shorter than the total length of the fabric to be gathered onto the elastic.

Fold the elastic in half to find the center, and mark the middle with a pin. Expand the pin using the corner flux of this sheet, and pin it in place on the wrong side of the fabric. Pin each elastic finish at the corresponding end of the trimmed edge. The edge of this sheet is more than the elastic, so it droops between the pins. Gently pull on the elastic and pin the edge of the sheet to the elongated elastic, facilitating in the beam evenly.

Sew the elastic to the edge of this sheet. Feed the elastic and sheet under the sewing machine needle using the elastic on top, stretching the elastic marginally to match the edge of this sheet. Sew with a wide, medium-length zigzag or appropriate stretch stitch, securing the screw with a couple backstitches at each end of the elastic. Repeat for each corner.
