The way to Upholster Rounded Corner Seats

When reupholstering chairs, you have access to a wide array of fabric colors and layouts, and while the builds on rounded cornered seats might appear difficult, a uniform appearance results in regarding the corners as the final step in a chronological sequence. It’s important not to skimp on fabric and batting, acquiring enough to pull around the chairs to set a safe hold. Beyond upgrading upholstery color and layout, it’s a fantastic time to replace the foam on your chairs. This increases the chairs’ comfort level and longevity.

Out With the Old

Turn your chair over, unscrewing the seat with a screwdriver if needed, then detach the other chairs. Measure the vertical and horizontal measurements of the seat, multiplying the measurements by two. Multiply by the number of additional chairs and procure fabric at that measurement.

Add 10 inches into the seat’s measurements, then multiply by the number of chairs. Use that measurement to procure batting. Add 6 inches into the seat’s measurements, then multiply by the number of seats and acquire foam at that measurement.

Remove the old fabric in the seat by pulling the staples with pliers to reveal the wooden seat beneath. Cut the new fabric, which makes it twice as big as the wooden seat, and lay the fabric across the job table. Cut the batting 8 inches larger than the seat; center it on top of the fabric, then place both components on another table.

Cut the foam 6 inches larger than the seat, then middle the seat onto it — top-side down. Trace the contours of the seat on the foam with a mark, cutting the foam around the line with a sharp box knife, then repeat the process for the other chairs. Spray the tops of the wooden chairs with spray glue, attaching the foam cut-outs.

In With the New

Center the foam to the batting, positioning the seat in addition to the foam. Pull the fabric inward at the seat’s middle on one side, stapling throughout the fabric and prayer, then firmly pull and staple the fabric on the other hand. Repeat this process on the seat’s other side and on the rest of the chairs.

Follow the seat’s contour, stapling on either side of the seat’s center staples while pulling the fabric tightly. Staple at 1/8-inch intervals, roughly 1 and 1/2 inches in the seat’s edges. Stop about 3 inches from each rounded corner on all sides of the chairs.

Staple toward the middle of each rounded corner, pinching and pulling tightly to set a pattern of folds on each side of the rounded corner’s middle. Create a bend — or ear — at each rounded corner’s middle, stapling it tightly.

Repeat the steps on each of chairs. Trim any extra fabric around the chairs’ undersides with scissors and screw the seats into the seat. Turn the chairs upright to enjoy the new look.
