Great Architecture Speaks to Us

Architecture that is great has significance. And when designed well, buildings can speak to us. However, what are they trying to convey?

Let us find out, shall we?

I’m not sure why Frank Lloyd Wright made his entrances so indirect. It is like any sort of modernist exercise program. You see your destination up there someplace. Ah, but first, let’s just walk down the block a bit and enjoy the view on the way. I bet Frank was very fit.

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto’s work was a direct reaction to his environment. His was a vernacular reflection of his very own unique culture and heritage. Unfortunately, he lived in Finland.

I’m pretty sure this is exactly what Le Corbusier meant in his five points of architecture:
Lift the construction off the floor. Set a garden on the roof. Utilize a free-form open design (duh).Use ribbon windows to maximize the views. Use hand sanitizer before shaking Le Corbusier’s hand.He was essentially the Howie Mandel of modern architecture.

You should envision that this being spoken in a thick German accent. I visited here a few decades before, and they really do allow you to take your shoes off before you put in the home. Plus, they supply you with a wicker basket filled with brushed socks to select from. These socks are available only in black or white. When you leave the home, you put the used socks into a stainless steel hamper that’s labeled “dirty socks” The font on the label is Helvetica. Mies would be quite proud.

Apparently this is Jacobean-style architecture, which I just discovered by Googling “Downton Abbey.” I assume these estates have an upstairs and a downstairs. High tea with Maggie Smith will happen in the study promptly at 4:00. You need to wear something formal.

Greek temples motivated Roman bathhouses motivated Palladian villas motivated neoclassical cathedrals motivated Jeffersonian campuses motivated “drive-thru” branch banks motivated suburban McMansions everywhere.

Sometimes development is unkind.
